Food Pantry
According to the Arlington Department of Human Services (2021), food insecurity affects at least 7.1% of residents in Arlington according to recent estimates. This means that over 16,670 of our neighbors are uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food for all members of their households at some point during a year. Food insecurity rates within Arlington vary significantly. Who you are and where you live affects your ability to find and afford healthy food for your family. The highest rates of food insecurity are found in the Glencarlyn neighborhood (14.6%) and Buckingham/Ashton Heights neighborhood (14.5).
ABB food pantry is strategically located near our friends in the Glencarlyn neighborhood.
ABB is only one of two food pantries open multiple days a week - 3 days a week, 7 hours a day. Many residents vacillate between the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), which only distributes food once a week - for 1 to 2 days of meals, and our location. In 2021, ABB distributed 10,540 pounds of high quality food to 3,459 families from neighborhoods across Arlington county.
For context, is home to 232,965 people living in a 26 square mile radius. While this geographic area is ranked 7th wealthiest county in the nation, 100 different cultural groups who speak 125 different languages are among the 8.4% of men, women and children living in poverty over 8.4% living in poverty.
